Cambridge Consultants recruits its 100th 'Tech Scholar'

Cambridge Consultants has announced that its Technology Scholarship programme has reached its 100th recruit. The highly regarded scheme, which began in 1989, further develops promising students that show a keen interest in engineering. The programme produces tomorrow's talented engineers with technical skill, adept thinking and commercial awareness, helping to fast track their careers. The scheme is run in collaboration with the Year in Industry.

Alan Gibbons, Head of Client Management at Year in Industry, says, "The Year in Industry is supported by top universities and over 250 UK companies take part each year, including Cambridge Consultants. The scheme is a part of the Engineering Development Trust (EDT), which is an independent charity with the objective to encourage young people to fulfil their potential through careers in science, engineering and technology. Enthusiastic students from across the UK are given the opportunity to experience real life exposure to industry, business and higher education and the scheme empowers them to make informed career choices."

The Year in Industry provides Cambridge Consultants with bright, innovative students who have just finished their A Levels and who want to pursue a career in engineering. Prior to going to university, the Technology Scholars spend their gap year at Cambridge Consultants, where they receive hands-on engineering training and gain experience of working on real projects. Besides working at Cambridge Consultants in their gap year, the Technology Scholars receive a bursary for the duration of their university course and the opportunity to work at the company during their summer vacations.

Jane Newrick, the HR officer at Cambridge Consultants running the Technology Scholar programme, commented, "We give our talented Technology Scholars help to develop their skills and the opportunity to enjoy a real experience in the engineering sector. Cambridge Consultants recruits a minimum of four scholars a year, and has taken on nine during the 2007/8 academic year, thus reaching its 100th marker. An achievement that we are really proud of."

Monty Barlow, ex-Technology Scholar and now group leader of the Digital Signal Processing Group at Cambridge Consultants, said of the scheme, "The scheme pushes exceptionally talented individuals through the ranks quickly, giving responsibility virtually from day one. It also puts the emphasis on commercial success and encourages thinking of revolutionary solutions…It was my route into the company and helped me be in a position to lead a team just four and a half years after university."
