Cambridge Consultants supports grassroots cleantech

  • Professor David Bellamy opens Cambridgeshire school's Environmental & Global Research Centre, supported by Cambridge Consultants

Cambridge Consultants supports Swavesey Village College’s eco-strategy, and has provided funds to purchase and install an environmentally-friendly ‘thin-client’ computing system for use by students at the school and the local community.  The school’s recently established Environmental & Global Research Centre, which will house the thin-client system, was opened by Professor David Bellamy OBE at a ceremony on 1st December.

The move to thin-client computing is part of the school’s wider strategy to save energy and optimise the efficiency of its operations.  As an organisation, it is committed to developing a culture which promotes an understanding of environmental issues and sustainability.

“The support from Cambridge Consultants for our environmental strategy, and this generous gift in particular, will help us to substantially reduce our carbon-footprint and educate the next generations of energy consumers to do the same,” explained Steve Howard, Assistant Principal at the Cambridgeshire School.  "The Centre will be used as a teaching room for students with integrated resources that demonstrate the advantages of sustainable living.  These include rainwater harvesting facilities, solar water heating and a wind turbine powered PC.  Students will be encouraged to investigate, calculate, and debate the advantages and disadvantages of sustainable developments locally, regionally, nationally and internationally."

"We are delighted that Professor David Bellamy was able to preside over the official opening of the Centre on 1st December," adds Mr Howard.  "He was joined by Yvonne Baker, Chief Executive of STEMNET, an organisation that seeks to encourage the adoption of science, technology, engineering and maths study in the UK."

The support is part of Cambridge Consultants' campaign to promote the development of cleaner, more efficient technology.  Commenting on the school’s eco-strategy, Craig Webster, Head of Cambridge Consultants’ cleantech campaign said: "A number of organisations have found that 'thin-computing' can reduce power consumption quite considerably by using resources more efficiently, and we are sure that this will prove to be a successful element of the school’s suite of clean technologies.  Mitigation of climate change and escalating fossil fuel costs will transform the way that businesses operate in the future, and clean technologies will have a major role in this transformation.  As a company, we are investing in the vital technologies that will enable the development of a new wave of cleaner, more sustainable products.  It is greatly encouraging to see a school invest in the vital skills that will be required in this new world."
