Next-generation telecommunications network management from CCL

Cambridge Consultants Limited (CCL®) has combined its expertise in telecommunications and intelligent routing to provide a system for routing circuits in Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (SDH) networks.

In an increasingly competitive market, telecommunication companies need to make better use of their SDH networks. CCL's new circuit router uses an intelligent algorithm to choose the best paths, resulting in improved customer service and increased revenue for the operator.

Current path and circuit managers are quite basic, and often route calls simply by choosing the shortest path between two nodes. This does not always make the best use of the network, or give the best match with customer requirements. Customers, for instance, want a route path that gives them the best service, while network operators want a path that makes optimal use of resources and that avoids restricting future routing options.

CCL's router uses an advanced algorithm to find the path that best meets these often conflicting requirements. It works to maximise availability to customers, while minimising latency and restoration time. For the operator, the router can minimise the extent of reconfiguring nodes and unnecessary fragmentation of resources. It will use resources efficiently by reserving protected lines for customers who want (and pay for) them, and by choosing routes that do not limit future routing options.

CCL's routing tool uses proprietary algorithms developed on previous route planning work to cope with the multiple, non-overlapping goals that arise in network route planning. CCL's intention is twofold: firstly, to use this technology to allow manufacturers to differentiate their management capabilities and exploit the distinguishing features of their hardware and software; secondly, to allow operators to make efficient use of their SDH networks, thus generating more revenue.
