RF Test Engineer

Main purpose of the job

To specify, develop and carry out tests on radio systems developed by Cambridge Consultants. The role includes both driving and contributing to the test requirements of wireless systems and being able to communicate these effectively to other members of the team.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

The RF & Analogue Systems Group forms a major part of the Wireless Division and is responsible for delivering both overall wireless system design and radio hardware design to clients of the company. In this role the RF & Analogue Systems Group works very closely with the other disciplinary groups which also exist inside the Wireless Division.

The Wireless Division applies standards-based radio solutions and also develops custom solutions for a wide range of our clients' applications principally in the telecommunications, healthcare, consumer goods and automotive areas. In addition to design services Cambridge Consultants also develops proprietary intellectual property, which it can licence to its clients. Examples include an implantable medical radio architecture, DECT and Bluetooth reference designs.

Recent examples, of our wireless design, include a cellular radio telemetry system for real-time medical monitoring, a high-quality digital radio link for a professional intercom system, a satellite telephone, a cordless video-telephone system, and an ultrawideband (UWB) IC design in addition to a large number of more conventional applications.

Specific responsibilities

The RF Test engineer will work with the design engineers to develop the test equipment and test stations along with the subsequent testing needed to evaluate and prove the RF performance of our products.

  • Develop test plans based upon top level product requirement specifications and engineering specifications
  • Construct RF test platforms using commercial test equipment and custom fixtures
  • Create automatic test programmes using Labview and Matlab or any other convenient  programming language
  • Undertake the testing of prototype and development systems

Minimum requirements

With relevant experience working as an RF test engineer, you will have experience of RF testing and its relevance to ultimate performance.  You will be familiar with RF test equipment such as spectrum & network analysers, signal generators, power meters and be able to construct solutions using RF interconnection blocks such as mixers, filters, splitters etc. 

  • You will be familiar with the language of RF testing such as sensitivity, noise figure, adjacent channel etc.
  • You will be able to write test programmes in Labview, Basic (e.g HPBasic) or similar ATE langauages
  • You will be able to create and present test reports in a logical and accurate manner
  • A limited understanding and ability in circuit design and some basic proficiency in ‘C’ would be an advantage for this position
