Clinical Diagnostics and Life-Science Instrumentation - Business Development Manager

Main purpose of the job

You will work with the Head of Business Development for Cambridge Consultants’ Clinical Diagnostics and Life-Science Instrumentation business. Your responsibility will be to support the strategy for the business and execute significant personal sales, marketing and client management activities that result in continued growth of this major sector of our business. 

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

The development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept through  prototype manufacture to transfer to production.  Projects often include considerable technical challenge. The Division undertakes development projects in the three focus areas of:

  • Clinical Diagnostics and Life-Science Instrumentation
  • Drug delivery systems
  • Surgical products and medical systems

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and broad industry experience to form powerful development teams.  Our work ranges from complete product developments to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

The group undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.

Specific responsibilities

You will be responsible for supporting all aspects of Business Development for our Clinical Diagnostics and Life-Science Instrumentation business.  You will:

  • Identify companies that are potential clients for Cambridge Consultants
  • Develop strong commercial relationships with senior executives in potential client companies
  • Personally close substantial sales
  • Work with our technical teams in Cambridge UK and Boston USA to maximize sales conversion
  • Feed back market information to the technical teams to support product and service development
  • Interact with teams across the broad technical base of Cambridge Consultants which includes:
  • Mechanical engineering
  • Product design
  • Electronics
  • Software
  • Regulatory affairs
  • Manufacturing technology
  • Process automation
  • Life sciences   

You will also use your strong commercial and technical skills to make a significant contribution to the overall direction of development projects, often working on more than one concurrently.

Whilst this position is based in Cambridge, UK, there will be international travel required (typically up to 25% of time)

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will be able to provide the following:

  • Proven success in developing business in the Clinical Diagnostics and Instrumentation or broader Medical Products sector with substantial contract values
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Significant commercial experience in medical product development, sales experience with a design and development services company or sales experience with a medical products company
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant engineering discipline or in the physical sciences
