Principal Scientist / Principal Engineer - Drug Delivery Devices

Main purpose of the job

To take a leading role in the design and delivery of multi-disciplinary projects in the field of drug delivery products and devices. The position will require you to apply your extensive drug delivery experience and project leadership skills to the development of world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

The development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenges. 
The Medical Technology Division undertakes development projects in the three focus areas of:

  • Drug delivery devices
  • Medical diagnostics and instrumentation
  • Surgical products and medical systems

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.
The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.

Specific responsibilities

As a senior member of staff, you will support the drug delivery campaign in a variety of ways from exhibiting and presenting at key conferences to representing the group at sales meetings.  You will use your strong technical expertise and knowledge of the drug delivery field to develop relationships with current and future clients by understanding their needs, writing proposals to define the work programmes, holding technical workshops and presenting data. 

You will provide a technical point of contact within the company for clients. Significant project management tasks will be a key part of the role, and you will lead multi-disciplinary projects teams including engineers, fluid dynamicists, industrial designers and laboratory scientists.

Your specific responsibilities will vary according to your particular expertise but are likely to include:

  • Definition of technical solutions for product or system developments
  • Leading design engineers to realise your technical solutions
  • Project management of significant device development projects
  • Systems engineering or technical review of complex development projects
  • Compilation of system architecture specifications
  • Root cause analysis and leadership of problem solving through laboratory based investigation
  • Transfer of designs to manufacture through liaison with external suppliers
  • Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have an excellent degree within an engineering or scientific discipline.  You should have a very high level of practical experience within an engineering design environment along with proven technical skills.  Knowledge of the drug delivery area is essential with experience at a pharmaceutical or medical device company being required.

You should be a self-motivated team player who is highly enthusiastic about the drug delivery area.  Significant project management or project leadership experience is essential.

An excellent understanding of medical device development processes compliant with ISO 13485 and QSR is also a key requirement.

Hands-on experience of manufacturing and assembly processes from one off designs to high volume manufacture would be an advantage.
