Optical Physicist

Main purpose of the job

To work on client assignments within multi-disciplinary teams undertaking design tasks principally of new optical and opto-electronic systems. The work often involves the combination of the development of hardware solutions operating in conjunction with signal processing electronics and algorithms, sometimes encompassing sophisticated mathematical techniques. The role offers many varied opportunities for the personal development of technical and commercial skills.

Specific responsibilities

This is an excellent opportunity for a physicist with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry and to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under tough commercial and time restraints.

You will be using your strong technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects, from initial concepts through to final delivery.   You will be taking the lead optical design role on multidisciplinary projects, including hands-on product development, design of optical and sensing systems and components, systems engineering, as well as taking the lead role in planning, proposal & concept generation, project management and liaison with clients.  You will also use your strong creative and technical skills to make a significant contribution to development projects and to participate in consultancy work within client companies.

You will be expected to liaise with others across many engineering disciplines and be responsible for specifying, designing and executing experimental programmes with teams of scientists and technicians. You will manage tasks within projects requiring delivery within tight timescales and budgets, managing both internal and external resources. There are opportunities for this side of the role to develop rapidly into management of projects including having full responsibility for delivery to our clients.

Minimum requirements

To meet the requirements of this role you will have:

  • A good first degree or PhD in physics or a related engineering discipline
  • Experience in delivering optical or opto-electronic systems, with an emphasis on sensing and analytical measurement
  • Experience in using optical design tools
  • An imaginative and inquisitive mind, eager to learn new skills and to develop solutions for interesting and complex problems
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written

In addition, any experience of the following will also be beneficial:

  • Product development in a commercial environment
  • C or MATLAB
  • Signal chain and system performance modelling and analysis
  • Algorithm development for sensing applications
  • Sensing technologies applicable to a range of physical effects

Due to the nature of some of the work, it will be necessary to obtain security clearance for the successful applicant, and therefore the applicant must hold UK nationality.
