Senior Consultant - Diagnostic Product Development

Main purpose of the job

As a Senior Consultant you will take a leading role in the design and delivery of multi-disciplinary projects in the field of diagnostic product development. The position will require you to apply your extensive diagnostic product development experience and technical expertise to the development of world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

The development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenges. 
The Medical Technology Division undertakes development projects in three focus areas:

  • Clinical diagnostics and instrumentation
  • Surgical products and medical systems
  • Drug delivery devices

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and broad industry experience to form powerful development teams.  Our work ranges from complete product developments to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes. Typical project examples for the diagnostic product development group include:

  • Ultra low cost, high volume over-the-counter diagnostics tests
  • Mid volume, point-of-care, bench-top devices 
  • Large complex, state of the art, extremely high sensitivity clinical analysers and life sciences instruments

The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.

Specific responsibilities

This role of Senior Consultant provides an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer or scientist with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry. Your challenge will be to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under tough commercial, regulatory and time constraints.

You will apply your excellent technical skills to solve complex engineering problems and deliver high performance, often novel solutions, within the diagnostic product development arena.

You will also be required to oversee and advise on implementation by less experienced engineers.

Your specific responsibilities will vary according to your particular expertise but are likely to include:

  • Definition of technical solutions for product or system developments
  • Provide technical leadership as either a technical authority or systems lead
  • Systems engineering or technical review of complex development projects
  • Compilation of system architecture specifications
  • Management of significant development projects and/or tasks within projects
  • Root cause analysis and leadership of problem solving through laboratory based investigation
  • Transfer of designs to manufacture through liaison with external suppliers
  • Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation
  • Contribute to the company’s external profile through development of IP or as a technical author

You will also support the diagnostics business development function, exhibiting and presenting at key conferences and representing the Diagnostics Group at sales meetings.  You will use your strong technical expertise and knowledge of the diagnostic product development field to develop relationships with current and future clients by demonstrating an understanding of their needs and writing proposals to define work programmes.

Minimum requirements

To meet the requirements of this role you should have a very high level of practical experience with proven technical skills in either optics, electronics/software, electromechanics, or fluidics and have significant experience in an engineering design environment.

You should be capable of acting as systems lead for complex multidisciplinary projects.

You should have significant experience in diagnostics either within a product company or consultancy with direct experience of in-vitro diagnostics.

You should have excellent oral & written communication skills.

You should be a self-motivated team player who is highly enthusiastic about the diagnostic product development area.

An excellent understanding of medical device development processes compliant with ISO 13485 and QSR is also a key requirement.
