Senior Consultant - Surgical & Interventional Products
Main purpose of the job
To take a leading role in the design and delivery of multi-disciplinary projects in the field of surgical & interventional devices. The position will require you to apply your extensive product development experience and project leadership skills to the development of world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.
Type of work undertaken by the division/group
The Medical Technology Division undertakes the development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenges.
The Division’s activities fall into three focus areas:
- Surgical and Interventional Products
- Medical Diagnostics and Instrumentation
- Drug Delivery Devices
We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.
Examples of our project work include:
- Development of a thermography system to diagnose vulnerable plaque in coronary arteries
- Design of an electrosurgical handset for arthroscopic tissue removal
- A real time progress monitoring system for kidney dialysis via differential conductivity measurement
The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.
Specific responsibilities
You will provide a technical point of contact within the company for clients. Significant project management tasks will be a key part of the role, and you will lead multi-disciplinary projects teams including engineers, physicists, industrial designers and scientists.
As a senior member of staff, you will support the business development campaigns in a variety of ways including attending, exhibiting and presenting at key conferences. You will also represent the company at sales meetings. You will use your strong technical expertise and knowledge of medical devices to develop relationships with current and future clients by understanding their needs, writing proposals to define the work programmes, holding technical workshops and presenting data.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced engineer or scientist with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry and to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under demanding commercial, regulatory and time constraints.
Your specific responsibilities will vary according to your particular expertise but are likely to include:
- Definition of technical solutions for product or system developments
- Leading design engineers to realise your technical solutions
- Project management of significant device development projects
- Systems engineering or technical review of complex systems
- Compilation of system architecture specifications
- Root cause analysis and leadership of problem solving through laboratory based investigation
- Transfer of designs to manufacture through liaison with external suppliers
- Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation
Minimum requirements
- To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have an excellent degree within an engineering or scientific discipline
- You should have a very high level of practical experience within an engineering design environment along with proven technical skills
- Knowledge of medical devices is essential with experience at a surgical products or medical device company a requirement
- You will be a self-motivated team player with enthusiasm and strong leadership skills
- Significant project management or project leadership experience is essential
- An excellent understanding of medical device development processes compliant with ISO13485 and Quality System Regulation is also a key requirement
- Hands-on experience of manufacturing and assembly processes from one off designs to high volume manufacture would be an advantage
In addition experience in the design, development or manufacture of the following will be beneficial:
- Laparoscopic or minimally invasive equipment
- Robotics in medical/surgical applications
- Surgical navigation technologies
- Implantable devices (cardiac rhythm management, neurostimulation)
