Main purpose of the job

To provide a significant contribution to major development projects in a technical lead or project management role. The position will involve working within multi-disciplinary teams of highly talented people to develop world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

The Medical Technology Division undertakes the development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenges.  
The Division’s activities fall into three focus areas:

  • Surgical and Interventional Products
  • Medical Diagnostics and Instrumentation
  • Drug Delivery Devices

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and a broad base of industry experience to form a powerful development team. Our work ranges from undertaking complete product developments from concept to market, to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.
Examples or our project work include:

  • Development of a thermography system to diagnose vulnerable plaque in coronary arteries
  • Design of an electrosurgical handset for arthroscopic tissue removal
  • A real time progress monitoring system for kidney dialysis via differential conductivity measurement

The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.

Specific responsibilities

As a Principal Physicist/Scientist, you will take the technical lead on projects working closely within teams of Engineers, Technicians, Consultants and Designers. You will be required to apply your Mathematics, Physics and Scientific knowledge to solve challenging technical problems. You will be experienced in the art of balancing technical ambitions against practical constraints and you will have a successful technical track record. You will use your commercial experience and awareness regarding technical issues, to act as the first point of contact for both clients and other engineers on projects. The role will involve using your strong technical expertise to liaise with clients to understand their technical needs and prepare proposals which capture these requirements.

You will be involved with hands-on product development and design of complex electro-mechanical systems. Your strong creative and technical skills should allow you to make a significant contribution to development projects and to participate in consultancy work within client companies.

Your specific responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Leading teams of technologists/engineers to develop high integrity complex systems for medical devices
  • Working closely with engineers and technicians to implement designs
  • Writing technical reports and producing high quality design documentation
  • Preparing technical programmes of work
  • Presenting findings to internal and external clients

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of this role you will have:

  • An excellent degree in Physics or a related discipline
  • Significant post graduate relevant industrial experience
  • Strong technical skills, with key strengths in practical application of the sciences
  • Experience of writing technical reports and proposals
  • A genuine passion for Physics and Engineering in general

You will have excellent team working skills and the ability and enthusiasm to mentor less experienced staff.  You will also have strong verbal and written communication and task management skills.

A proven ability to manage a team of engineers and technicians is highly desirable as is an appreciation of risk management tools used in product development.
In addition, experience of the following will be beneficial:

  • A working knowledge of medical device development processes compliant with ISO13485 and Quality System Regulation
  • Multi-disciplinary control engineering
  • Systems engineering including generation of specifications and documentation
  • An ability to apply simulation tools such as Matlab / Simulink to model complex problems and solutions
  • A post-graduate qualification with a high level of practical experience would also be advantageous
