Cambridge Consultants
Principal Physicist/Scientist

Graduate Mathematician or Engineer

Main purpose of the job

A graduate engineer or mathematician is required to work on client assignments and provide key ideas for projects involving algorithm development and signal processing for radar, location systems and a wide variety of different sensor technologies and systems.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

Within the Products and Systems Division resides our expertise in the fields of radar, location system design, sensing, advanced control and signal processing. The work undertaken is based on the application of sophisticated mathematics to a wide variety of sensors encompassing different technologies including radio and optics based systems as well as other physical sensing technologies. This work often includes areas of sensor fusion. A large part of this expertise is based around advanced signal processing. There will also be opportunities to work in extracting information from complex signals in a wide range of more general measurement applications.

Specific responsibilities

Technical staff work on client assignments in multi-disciplinary project teams, sometimes on more than one project concurrently and in different team roles. A strong desire to learn to develop and implement solutions based on different technologies and for different target markets is essential. Our customer base covers a diverse range of sectors including defence, commercial, consumer and industrial.

High quality work is essential from every team member.

You will work on the design of signal processing algorithms for imaging, detection and sensing systems, and their implementation in hardware and/or embedded software.

As a project team member you will be responsible for carrying out your specific project tasks within the time-scales and budgets agreed with your project managers. There are many aspects to the work in addition to design. As your experience develops, you might wish to take on further responsibilities.

Minimum requirements

To meet the requirements of this role you will have:

  • An excellent first degree or PhD in engineering, physics, mathematics or related discipline
  • Proven ability of strong mathematical skills and interest in applying mathematics to solve problems
  • Imaginative and inquisitive mind, eager to learn new skills and to develop solutions for interesting and complex problems
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal
  • Good software engineering skills

In addition, any experience of the following will also be beneficial:

  • Knowledge and experience of the application of Bayesian Inference in processing systems
  • Experience of using C and MATLAB
  • Experience in algorithm design, ideally in a signal processing environment
  • Experience in implementation in hardware or software, ideally in signal processing systems

Graduates with industrial experience or recent graduates with relevant academic course or research experience are welcomed.
Due to the nature of the work, it will be necessary to obtain security clearance for the successful applicant, and therefore the applicant must hold UK nationality.
