Project Manager – Wireless

Main purpose of the job

Managing challenging and often complex wireless product developments for clients in a wide range of market sectors, covering the full Product Development Lifecycle from concept to manufacture.  The role offers a high level of diversity and interest and includes interworking with other seniors within the Wireless Division to develop relationships with prospective clients and to identify new business opportunities.

Cambridge Consultants is a world leader in wireless communications, with one of the largest independent wireless development teams in the world.  The group works across the entire wireless landscape - from high volume consumer applications such as portable internet-based devices, through to professional high-performance systems including the air traffic control radios used to govern the US airspace.  This breadth of wireless activity provides tremendous variety to our team members.  The markets that we address include telecommunications, healthcare, industrial, satellite, consumer and automotive.  Examples of our wireless design includes the first digital patient monitor in the medical WMTS band, the WiMAX PHY reference design adopted as the gold standard for European type approval testing, a professional intercom used at the Olympic Games and within professional broadcasting studios, satellite handsets, as well as key technologies fuelling the rollout of 4th generation cellular systems.

Specific responsibilities

Managing wireless development projects, typically consisting of multidisciplinary teams (including hardware, software, digital signal processing, mechanics and production engineering).

You will manage projects through the complete development lifecycle, from requirements definition through to final delivery.  You will be involved in proposal preparation, selection of the team, negotiating with 3rd parties, managing concept generation, analysis of system architecture, liaison across engineering disciplines and the specification, implementation and testing of the design.

You will manage projects typically in the region £10,000 to £3,000,000 that require delivery within tight timescales and budgets, managing both internal and external resources.  You will report project progress directly to clients.

Minimum requirements

A good degree in engineering. Substantial industrial experience managing wireless product design and development covering the full product development lifecycle. Other requirements include;

  • Understanding of the wireless product development process
  • Experience in managing products into manufacture
  • Experienced in managing multi-disciplinary projects (RF, analogue, digital, software, mechanics)
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Working knowledge and experience of the wireless regulatory and type approval environment is desirable
