Radio System Lead

Main purpose of the job

To take a lead role in the development of state-of-the-art wireless systems.
The role involves leading a team in the specification, design and implementation of advanced wireless products, providing direction and guidance that results in successful and market-leading solutions for our clients.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

Cambridge Consultants’ Wireless Division is responsible for delivering wireless systems and components to clients of the company and to other internal groups.  This role will therefore involve close interworking with the range of disciplines within the Wireless Division, as well as the even wider range within Cambridge Consultants.

The Division implements both standards-based radio solutions and custom solutions for a wide range of applications, principally in the telecommunications, healthcare, industrial and consumer goods and automotive market areas.  In addition to design services Cambridge Consultants invests in its own proprietary intellectual property, which it licences to its clients.  Examples of our wireless product designs include 4th generation cellular technology, the air traffic control radios that govern the majority of the US airspace, a micro-cellular telemetry system for real-time medical monitoring, a high-quality professional intercom system relied on by events like the Olympics, satellite telephones, a cordless video-telephone system and an ultrawideband (UWB) IC design. This is in addition to a large number of more conventional applications.

Specific responsibilities

  • To take a lead role in the Radio Systems Group. Prepare specifications for wireless systems, the design of wireless systems and be capable of converting application requirements into real solutions
  • Lead multi-faceted engineering teams, focusing the team to deliver a solution
  • Participate in sales meetings with clients and, in conjunction with the business developer’s, help interpret client requirements and demonstrate Cambridge Consultants' capability
  • Prepare and generate the technical response to bids and tenders for both existing and future clients
  • Define the most suitable analogue system design or architecture to meet a specification
  • Create novel design solutions that will be of particular interest to our clients and contribute to Cambridge Consultants IP portfolio
  • Act as a design mentor to other members of staff and to contribute to the development of the technical discipline of the group
  • Where appropriate, contribute to the maintenance and development of our CAD systems to enhance our development capability

 

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements of the role you will have a good degree in an engineering or related subject.  With previous relevant experience working as a radio designer, possibly within a lead role for a telecommunications company or other relevant area, you will also have:

  • A strong technical background in radio design
  • Extensive experience of overall system design across multiple disciplines
  • A proven ability to lead engineering teams
  • Good knowledge of the product development process
  • A proven record of getting designs right first time
  • Good oral and written communication skills
  • The ability to interact effectively at all levels in a client organization

An understanding of wireless DSP will be considered an advantage (where appropriate, training will be provided)
