PhD Physicist/Optics Engineer
Main purpose of the job
Our diagnostic product development group are currently looking for a PhD Physicist/Optics Engineer to work on client assignments and provide key design input for projects involving sensing solutions for the development of world-leading medical products for our clients around the globe.
Type of work undertaken by the group
The development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenges.
The Medical Technology Division undertakes development projects in three focus areas:
- Clinical diagnostics and instrumentation
- Surgical products and medical systems
- Drug delivery devices
We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and broad industry experience to form powerful development teams. Our work ranges from complete product developments to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.
Typical project examples for the diagnostic product development group include:
- Ultra low cost, high volume over-the-counter diagnostics tests
- Mid volume, point-of-care, bench-top devices
- Large complex, state of the art, extremely high sensitivity clinical analysers and life sciences instruments
Specific responsibilities
The role of the PhD Physicist/Optics Engineer provides an excellent opportunity for a physicist with the ambition and ability to achieve excellent results in a highly demanding industry and to find novel and radical solutions to new and existing problems under tough commercial, regulatory and time constraints.
Your specific responsibilities will vary according to your particular expertise but are likely to include:
- Optical design role on multidisciplinary projects
- Development of specifications
- Generation of innovative solutions
- Identification of risks
- Proof of principle by analysis and laboratory evaluation
- Detailed design, implementation and test
- Effective communication, both internally and in front of clients
- Preparation of comprehensive documentation
- Contribution to the company’s external profile through development of IP or as a technical author
You will also support the diagnostics business development function, exhibiting and presenting at key conferences and representing the Diagnostics Group at sales meetings. You will use your strong technical expertise and knowledge to develop relationships with current and future clients by demonstrating an understanding of their needs and writing proposals to define work programmes.
Minimum requirements
To meet the requirements of this role you should have
- A good first degree in Physics or Natural Sciences
- Experience, preferably to PhD level, of the development of optical techniques of relevance to diagnostic or life science applications
- A strong understanding of the principles of sensing and measurement and the ability to undertake signal chain analysis
- Strong practical skills with experience of ‘hands-on’ development
- A creative mind, capable of designing bespoke solutions to complex sensing challenges where existing off the shelf solutions will not meet performance criteria
- Excellent oral and written skills appropriate for project management and client facing roles
- Strong personal motivation and enthusiasm for the technology area
- The ability to work effectively as a team player
In addition, any experience of the following will also be beneficial:
- Direct experience of an emerging technology that will be commercially important in life sciences or diagnostics in the near future
- Experience in using optical design tools
- Experience of C or MATLAB
- Algorithm development for sensing applications
- Product development in a commercial environment
- Experience of other, non-optical, sensing technologies
