Digital Hardware/ASIC/FPGA Design Engineer

Main purpose of the job

As a Digital Hardware/ASIC/FPGA design engineer you will work on state-of-the-art wireless systems, from concept definition through ASIC / FPGA and board-level circuit-design, to transfer to volume production. The role offers a high level of diversity through the application of the very latest wireless technology to a wide range of market sectors.

Type of work undertaken by the group

The group works across the entire wireless landscape - from high volume consumer applications such as portable internet-based devices, through to professional high-performance systems such as the air traffic control radios used to govern the US airspace. Examples of our wireless design include the first digital patient monitor in the medical WMTS band, the WiMAX PHY reference design adopted as the gold standard for European type approval testing, a professional intercom used at the Olympic Games, satellite handsets with global coverage, as well as key technologies fuelling the rollout of 4th generation cellular systems.

Specific responsibilities

In this role you will be responsible for:

  • Specification and system design of new products
  • ASIC and FPGA design and verification
  • Board-level digital circuit design
  • Review and guidance for PCB layout
  • Working at all times as part of a close-knit multi-disciplinary project team focussed on delivering the design solution to our client
  • Technical contribution to proposals and quotations for new development projects
  • Creating novel design solutions that will be of value to our clients

Minimum requirements

With an appropriate background working for an electronic design or IC design organisation, you will have significant and relevant experience of digital ASIC or FPGA design as well as design of board-level circuits. A good degree in electronic engineering or a related discipline is also required along with excellent oral & written communication skills.

Knowledge of any of the following areas would be an advantage:

  • High-speed digital board design
  • DSP implementation in hardware
  • An understanding of radio system architecture
  • An appreciation of analogue design techniques

Experience of the following tools would be valuable:

  • Synopsys VCS Verilog
  • Synopsys Design Compiler
  • System Verilog
  • Synplicity Synplify Pro
  • Xilinx and Altera FPGA Place and Route
