Analytical Engineer

Main purpose of the job

To work within multi-disciplinary project teams on the development of medical devices. You will apply your mechanical engineering abilities and analytical skills to implement solutions to practical engineering challenges.

Type of work undertaken by the divison/group

The development of innovative medical devices and equipment from concept to prototype manufacture, often incorporating considerable technical challenges. The Medical Technology Division undertakes development projects in three focus areas:

  • Clinical diagnostics and instrumentation
  • Surgical products and medical systems
  • Drug delivery devices

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and broad industry experience to form powerful development teams. Our work ranges from complete product developments to providing consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes.

Typical project examples for the diagnostic product development group include:

  • Ultra low cost, high volume over-the-counter diagnostics tests
  • Mid volume, point-of-care, bench-top devices 

Large complex, state of the art, extremely high sensitivity clinical analysers and life sciences instruments.

Specific responsibilities

As an analytical engineer you will be responsible for analysing engineering problems and researching and defining design solutions for product or system developments. You will undertake or lead numerical / CFD analyses of concepts and solutions. You will be comfortable presenting and explaining your work internally to the project team and externally to clients. You will be expected to work to the company quality standards and deliver work to the prescribed timelines and specifications. You will write technical reports and produce high quality design documentation. You will support sales work, when required, through research and project work.

Minimum requirements

To meet the demanding requirements for the role of analytical engineer you will have an excellent degree in mechanical engineering.

  • You will be able to demonstrate flair and passion for problem solving and engineering design
  • You should have some relevant practical experience, ideally having spent time in an engineering design environment. Exposure to the Medical Device industry would be an advantage
  • You will have strong technical skills, with strengths in fluid mechanics or material and structural analysis
  • Experience in 3D CAD, preferably Pro Engineer and Solid Works is required. An understanding of manufacturing techniques, assembly processes and material selection is also desirable
  • Hands-on experience with any of the following will also be beneficial: Finite element analysis, Computational fluid dynamics, Pro/Engineer, Solid Works, Matlab and Simulink
