RF Design Engineer

Main purpose of the job

As RF Design Engineer, you will design Radio Frequency (RF) hardware for implantable and body area network medical devices.

Type of work undertaken by the division/group

The Medical Technology Division develops innovative medical implants, devices and equipment from concept, through prototype manufacture, to new product introduction, often incorporating considerable technical challenges.  We undertake development projects in four principal focus areas:

  • Surgical products and medical systems
  • Drug delivery devices
  • Diagnostics devices & systems
  • Connected health systems

We combine highly creative lateral thinking with excellent technical skills and broad industry experience to form powerful development teams.  Our work ranges from complete product developments to focused consulting services for our clients on their technology, strategy or development processes. 
The division undertakes both client funded and internally funded projects.

Specific responsibilities

You will assume a design role for the development of electronic medical products from specification through validation. You will:

  • Design RF circuitry for medical devices.
  • Design, fabricate and test antennas for implants and near-body medical devices.
  • Lead tasks across the entire development cycle including specification, design, prototyping, and verification/validation.
  • Participate in meetings and presentations with clients, communicating ideas and engineering concepts across disciplines.
  • Support business development in client meetings and be involved in project planning.
  • Interact with team members in the US and UK from various disciplines: software, mechanical, optics, life sciences and regulatory.

Minimum requirements

  • A minimum of 7 years of RF hardware design, specializing in antennas and RF circuitry to FCC and ETSI specifications.
  • Working knowledge of software such as HFSS, Designer, CST Microwave Studio, and MatLab.
  • Familiarity with electrically-short, magnetic, inverted F, loop and patch antennas, antenna arrays, and beam-forming networks.
  • Matching circuit, diplexer, and combiner design knowledge with or without lumped components
  • Strong competency with laboratory measurements (return loss, gain patterns, impedance, S-parameters, antenna tuning, etc.).
  • Experience with developing link budgets and familiarity with RF multipath reflection and fading effects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • System-level familiarity with multiple disciplines (software, mechanical etc.).
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering required. (PhD degree desired.)
  • Medical device experience is a plus.
  • Travel (up to 30%), including international travel.
  • Eligibility to work in the US without sponsorship.
